At the recent 2024 Africa Energy Forum (AEF) in Barcelona, Spain, Ghana’s Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, made a compelling appeal to global energy leaders and experts to invest in Ghana’s expanding energy sector. Dr. Prempeh emphasized that significant investments are needed to enhance the nation’s renewable energy capabilities, improve energy access, and modernize the grid system to support economic growth and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
During his address, Dr. Prempeh outlined the critical areas in need of investment, which include expanding renewable energy sources, upgrading energy infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing population and business sector, and driving the nation toward leading sustainable energy efforts in the sub-region and beyond. He stressed the importance of unlocking these opportunities to accelerate Ghana’s economic development, secure energy supplies, and uplift the living standards of its people.
“We need your investment to unlock these potentials, accelerate our economic growth, improve energy security, and enhance the quality of life of our citizens,” Dr. Prempeh urged the assembly of global energy stakeholders. In a roundtable discussion with other African Energy Ministers, Dr. Prempeh deliberated on the theme “Energy Systems for the Future,” focusing on how to align Africa’s energy needs with global sustainability goals. This session provided a platform for sharing insights and strategies to balance regional development with environmental and economic sustainability.
The Minister also engaged in strategic meetings with key international figures, including the UK Trade Commissioner for Africa and heads of major energy firms, under the auspices of the Powering Africa program. These discussions aimed at positioning Ghana’s energy sector to attract more foreign investment and establish stronger partnerships.
Additionally, Dr. Prempeh participated in a panel discussion about “Building Cohesive Gas Value Chains and Developing Future Infrastructure” at the forum. He highlighted the crucial role of natural gas in Africa’s industrialization, particularly as the continent moves toward more sustainable energy solutions. Dr. Prempeh pointed out that natural gas stands as the most viable option for power generation and industrial processes amid the global transition to cleaner energy sources.
By promoting Ghana at such a high-profile international event, Dr. Prempeh aimed to position the country as a prime destination for energy investments. His efforts emphasized Ghana’s strategic advantages, including its favorable business environment, strategic geographical location, and the increasing demand for energy.
The Africa Energy Forum, renowned as a premier gathering for energy stakeholders, provides a critical platform for dialogue, innovation sharing, and networking among global energy leaders. Dr. Prempeh’s involvement not only highlights Ghana’s proactive approach to energy challenges but also its readiness to adopt best practices and cutting-edge solutions to ensure sustainable energy development.
