IMANI Africa Urges Government to Enhance Transparency in Performance Tracker

Policy Think Tank Emphasizes Need for Comprehensive Data for Tracker

by Ikeoluwa Juliana Ogungbangbe

IMANI Africa, a renowned policy think tank, has urged the government to bolster the information and data provided in the recently unveiled Performance Tracker. While acknowledging the tracker as a positive policy initiative, IMANI Africa stressed the need for comprehensive data to optimize its effectiveness.

The Performance Tracker was introduced by Ghana’s Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during an event at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Oppong Nkrumah disclosed that the tracker currently encompasses over 13,000 projects nationwide.

However, Amprofi Agyemang, a senior research associate at IMANI Africa, expressed concerns over the vagueness of the tracker’s data. Agyemang emphasized the critical importance of ensuring that Ghanaians receive tangible value for their investments through the tracker and called for enhancements to achieve measurable results. “The tracker needs more information, it needs real data, and the data must be available to independent bodies to validate for themselves,” Agyemang stated during an interview on Citi TV.

He suggested the establishment of an independent body to validate the data, highlighting the necessity for a rigorous validation process to address potential flaws. Agyemang emphasized the need for transparency, stating that merely setting up a website with limited information is insufficient. “As we have expended resources on this initiative, it is imperative that we strive for continuous improvement. This can only be achieved by providing all necessary information to make the tracker more comprehensive,” Agyemang said.

IMANI Africa’s call for enhanced transparency in the Performance Tracker underscores the importance of accountability and effective utilization of public resources for the benefit of Ghanaian citizens. As stakeholders continue to scrutinize government initiatives, the demand for robust data and transparency remains paramount.
