Amid the ongoing crisis caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage, Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, advocates for a centralized donation system to ensure fair and efficient distribution of relief aids to the flood victims.
According to a report by Graphic Online, the proposed mechanism aims to prevent unequal aid distribution, ensuring that every affected individual, even in less-visible communities, receives the necessary support. “In these challenging times, overlooking certain groups because they lack media coverage is unacceptable,” Dr. Frimpong asserted during a conversation addressing the aftermath of the spillage that engulfed numerous homes and enterprises in various regions, including Volta, Oti, Eastern, Savanna, Northern, and parts of Greater Accra.
Describing the catastrophe as a moment of national solidarity, he urged Ghanaians to embody a spirit of compassion, emphasizing that the crisis should be a catalyst for unity rather than political division. “Now is the time to prioritize human welfare over politics,” he stressed, applauding the contributions already made by diverse entities but reinforcing the need for continued generosity.
Critiquing the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) handling of the situation, Dr. Frimpong highlighted the apparent lack of deliberation and coordination with local assemblies, security outfits, educational bodies, and other stakeholders prior to the spillage. He insisted on accountability for the oversight, emphasizing that the responsible entities must uphold their duties. “If the tasks entrusted to you are mishandled, taking full responsibility is imperative,” he concluded.
