Ho Hospital Impostor Sentenced: Regional Maritime University Denies Connection

by Victor Adetimilehin

Isaac Sumatu, who impersonated a gynecologist at Ho Teaching Hospital, faces the consequences of his deceit. While justice is served, the Regional Maritime University disavows any association.

Isaac Sumatu, the man who falsely posed as a gynecologist at Ho Teaching Hospital in September 2023, has been sentenced to a two-year prison term and fined GH¢12,000 by the Ho Circuit Court. Sumatu had duped an unsuspecting woman into believing he was a medical professional, offering fraudulent diagnoses and concocted medications.

However, an unexpected twist surrounds this case. The Regional Maritime University, which was initially linked to the impostor, has vehemently denied any connection to Isaac Sumatu. In a rejoinder to a report published by Graphic Online, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Jethro Wilbert Brooks Jnr., clarified that Sumatu is not a student in any of the university’s programs. This revelation shatters the initial impression that the impostor was a student of the university.

The court was previously informed that Isaac Sumatu was a student of the Nautical College in Accra, which is now known as the Regional Maritime University. Court documents also identified him as a student of the Nautical College. However, the university’s official statement contradicts this information.

Isaac Sumatu’s deceitful actions included convincing a woman at the hospital that he was a gynecologist named “Dr. Edward” and falsely diagnosing her with a severe medical condition. He claimed that her womb was at risk of blockage, which could prevent her from conceiving in the future. The victim was instructed to return to the hospital the next day for treatment, during which Sumatu would provide the necessary medications.

The impostor maintained the illusion by contacting the woman by phone, assuring her that the prescribed medications were available. He requested GH¢200 and a bottle of water to facilitate the concoction of the supposed treatment. However, the woman became suspicious when she received her “treatment” in the hospital’s blood bank, which was an unusual location for medical consultations. Upon inquiring at the hospital, she discovered that there was no gynecologist named Dr. Edward. This prompted her to report the incident to the police.

Isaac Sumatu was apprehended on September 18, 2023, while loitering at the hospital. He confessed to impersonating a doctor and administering a mixture of Vitamin C and paracetamol to the victim. The court found him guilty, and he was subsequently sentenced.

Despite the initial confusion regarding his educational affiliation, the Regional Maritime University has emphasized that Isaac Sumatu is not a student of the institution. The university has called for the immediate retraction of any statements suggesting otherwise, as it negatively impacts the university’s reputation both locally and internationally.

As this bizarre case unfolds, the message is clear: deceitful actions have consequences. Justice has been served, and the victim’s vigilance in seeking the truth has played a pivotal role in uncovering the impostor. While the story began with deception, it concludes with the affirmation of truth and the unwavering commitment of institutions to uphold their integrity.
