The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently condemned the recent attack on United Television (UTV) studios and has accused high-ranking members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of inciting the violence.

The attack occurred during a live broadcast of UTV’s popular entertainment show, “United Showbiz,” on Saturday evening. Aggressive individuals, allegedly affiliated with the NPP, stormed the studios, creating chaos and issuing threats to the host and guests.

In an official statement, the NDC described the attack as “a reprehensible and cowardly act” and unequivocally condemned it, emphasizing that such uncivilized behavior has no place in a democratic society. They stressed that the freedom of the press and the safety of media personnel must be upheld at all times.

Furthermore, the NDC alleged that the attack was provoked by the recent confrontational stance of government officials and the NPP towards UTV and its flagship program, “United Showbiz.” They argued that this attack is part of a pattern of aggression displayed by individuals associated with the NPP towards those simply carrying out their lawful duties.

The NDC has called upon various stakeholders, including the Ghana Journalists Association, civil society organizations, and traditional and moral authorities, to speak out against this attack. They have also urged the Ghana Police Service to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible face legal consequences.

The assault on UTV has triggered widespread condemnation from the public, including the National Media Commission and the Ministry of Information. The Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation and has apprehended some of the suspects involved, providing hope that justice will be served.

The NDC’s statement expressed deep concern over the growing intolerance of dissenting viewpoints in Ghana under the current administration. They decried the efforts to stifle free speech and emphasized that these actions are eroding the country’s press freedom and democratic values.

The NDC’s appeal to various organizations and authorities underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a collective effort to safeguard democratic principles and free expression in Ghana. It is a call for unity in defense of the nation’s democratic ideals.

As investigations proceed, many Ghanaians and supporters of democracy are hopeful that justice will prevail and that incidents like this will not deter the nation’s commitment to upholding democratic values and press freedom. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights of journalists and the integrity of the media in a thriving democracy.

In the face of such challenges, it is essential for Ghanaians to stand together, reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles, and work collectively to ensure that the freedom of the press and the safety of media professionals are upheld. Ghana has a rich history of democracy, and it is in the best interest of the nation to protect and nurture these values for future generations.
