Kyerematen Exits NPP; Afia Pokuaa Sees Tactical Play Against Akufo-Addo

by Ikeoluwa Juliana Ogungbangbe

Afia Pokuaa, a well-known figure in the television and radio landscape, has weighed in on Alan Kyerematen’s surprising decision to resign from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). She interprets this move as a direct response to perceived injustices from party stalwarts, particularly from Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The political realm was abuzz on September 25, 2023, when Kyerematen, in a public declaration, announced his exit from the NPP. Not only did he leave the party, but he also unveiled his ambitions to contest the 2024 elections as an Independent Candidate. His ultimate goal? To secure the coveted position of Ghana’s President by 2025. In explaining his decision, Kyerematen pointed to the evolving political dynamics within the country and reaffirmed his undying passion to serve the Ghanaian populace.

Afia Pokuaa, upon reflection on this political shakeup, offered a nuanced interpretation. While many might anticipate Kyerematen’s bid for the presidency, Pokuaa argues that his motives might not be strictly about clinching a victory in the forthcoming elections. Instead, she believes Kyerematen’s maneuver is steeped in political strategy, and it’s more about communicating a pointed message to significant figures in the NPP, notably Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Elaborating on her viewpoint, Pokuaa expressed, “While on the surface, Alan’s aim seems directed at the 2024 elections, the undercurrents tell a different story. He’s acutely aware of the electoral hurdles that lie ahead. However, his actions seem to be more about political maneuvering and making a statement.

By stepping away and challenging the party’s established order, Kyerematen is essentially telling Akufo-Addo and Bawumia that they cannot take his influence and the loyalty of his supporters for granted. In a way, he’s throwing a wrench into their ‘break the eight’ campaign strategy, signaling that their path to continued dominance might be more challenging without his backing.”
